  • Bosses cannot be attacked during Conquest/Node War, so switch Channels if this is the case.
  • After you initiate combat with a Dark Rift boss, other players will not be able to see or PVP you.
  • Dark Rift bosses that haven't been killed in 24 hours will slowly loose levels and loose AP/DP.
    • Level Ranges: I, II, III, IV, and V.
    • 1 level is lost every 24 hours.

Dark Rift Combat Tactics

Dark Rift Bosses are challenging and are not meant to be easy and fast. Players report that sometimes iframes/blocks/SA doesn't work against them. Don't run in mindlessly, expecting the boss to fall in a few minutes. These fights take time and strategy. Study the boss's movements and you will start to learn their patterns of attack. When you can anticipate their moves, you can dodge attacks to survive and win.

Dark Rifts are placed right in the middle of normal grinding areas. This means you have to consider how well you can fight mobs at that location. While fighting the boss, anticipate moving through mobs that chase you and block movement.

Dark Rift Combat Tips:

Best Classes for Dark Rifts?
I have found the Archer to be my favorite class to use, until he runs out of HP pots... Ha! He is expert at strafing and leaping out of danger. Any class that has good movement and/or healing capability will help, such as Witch/Wizard, who have direct heals and Lahn, with many offensive HP regen skills. Classes with a summon can help take aggro off of you for a bit.

Ancient Puturum

BDO Dark Rift Boss: Ancient Puturum

Difficulty: Very Hard
Location: Valencia
Loot Box: Box of the Silent Dead Box of the Silent Dead:
Box of the Silent Dead -- 1 RNG item from chest loot list: Cron Stone, Laytenn’s Power Stone, Ogre Ring, Eye of the Ruins Ring, Narc Ear Accessory, Valtarra Eclipsed Belt, Orkinrad's Belt, Basilisk's Belt, Ring of Crescent Guardian

Ancient Puturm Tactics:
Ancient Puturum can be difficult. Strafe when he swoops in for a flying charge. After his charge, get ready to Back Attack him. When he stops flying and sits, he's charging a heavy hitting lightning attack. Get out of range. Look for the warning message before he deals a powerful attack. The biggest obstacles are the mobs that naturally spawn there. They will stun you and if you have low DP, it can get very ouchy. Bring a friend to clear if needed.

Ahib Griffon

BDO Dark Rift Boss: Ahib Griffon

Difficulty: Very Hard
Location: Kamasylvia
Loot Box: Box of the Silent Dead Box of the Silent Dead:

Ahib Griffon Tactics:
Paints the ground red before his heavy hitting attack. Run out of the red area. He rears up and back before his very foul breath attack. Try not to wander out of the small cleared circle that he spawns in. If you accidently shoot the native mobs surrounding Ahib Griffon's spawn point, it can be a real pain. Don't forget you can run away from the mobs to reset them to their original spawn location.

Ronin

Ronin Tactics:
Straightforward fight. He charges then stops for about 4 seconds. Back Attack him.

Moghulis Tactics:
He frequently rolls into a ball and charges at you. Use your evasive sideways manuvers or block. If you get in front of one of the big boulders in the area and he traps you there with that rolling ball charge, you're dead. Keep moving with fast atacks and you'll be ok. Don't get yourself pinned against a boulder, like I did. :) He spawns a tough golem ad that is very annoying and will stun you.

Ferrid

Ferrid Tactics:
This one is challenging because Ferrid is inside and you are boxed in by the walls of a small pit. Ferrid will reach his hands into the air before his powerful attack.

Dim Tree Spirit

Combat Tips: This boss spawns in some challenging environments with lots of boulders and/or trees. If you get too far from Dim Tree, he will long range attack, which hits 100%. This is a heavy hitting attack that you must invuln or block. Don't get too close or his melee will Back Attack you and bypass your Block. He and his adds have rapid fire Knockdown, so you will need Block and/or quick strafing.

Ruins Guard Tower

Location: Calpheon
Loot Box: Box of the Silent Dead Box of the Distorted Dead:

Ruins Guard Tower Tips: Fairly easy. Stay out of the red patches on the ground that show his red laser beam area of effect. This boss stays stationary and his ads are extremely slow. Don't waste allot of time on the high health ads, as they just keep respawning after you kill them. When he starts shooting white rockets, strafe.

Gehaku Tips: He has a frequent and very fast charge with CC. There is a very narrow window when you can hit him. When he roars, he will begin a range attack, get far away or block if possible. That stuff hurts bad!

Dastard Behg Tactics:
Dastard Behg is CC happy. His normal attack with that nasty grappling hook has an obscenely long ranged Knockdown! Ack, he can be a pain to say the least. Keep strafing and using quick attacks. Finding that narrow window when you can hit him is tricky.

Giath

Giath Tips: He does allot of Knockdown attacks and will do a flaming ranged attack that Knocks down as well. Forward Guard and Superarmor are your friend. Once in a while he'll pause for a breather, but not very often. He's a tough one. Keep strafing and use fast hits.

Red Nose

Red Nose Tactics:
Red Nose likes to CC, so you have to keep strafing. Once in a while he will belly flop and lay on the ground for 4 seconds. If you avoid it, you can unload your slower, more heavy hitting Down Attack on him.

Copied from the article "Defeat the Bosses from the Dark Rift!" posted on 13 February 2019 12:00

Hello Adventurers!

Dark Rifts have been added to Black Desert with 02/13 (Wed) maintenance.

Bosses are appearing from the Dark Rift throughout the Monster Zones, shall we go to see what it’s like?

Dark Rift?

Adventurers that have completed the prerequisite quests can encounter bosses from the Dark Rift in Monster Zones.

The Dark Rift, and the bosses from the Dark Rift have one thing in common: they both can only be seen by “You”.

Therefore, these bosses must be defeated alone.

There is a chance you can obtain a box with accessories after defeating a boss that spawns from the Dark Rift.

However, the difficulty level of each boss varies based on which Monster Zone it appears in, so exercise caution when attacking one.

▲ Giath appearing from the Dark Rift. Their appearance and combat-style isn’t any different from usual.

1. Prerequisite Quests

There is a newly-added prerequisite quest, [Awakening Complete] Memories of the Past, that needs to be completed to unlock the Dark Rift. You need to have completed the Awakening Quest of your class to obtain the [Awakening Complete] Memories of the Past from the Black Spirit.

2. Spawning

How do you know if a boss has appeared from the Dark Rift?

A large notification message will appear on the upper-center of the game window, then a message and a mark will also appear on the lower-right UI of your game screen as well.

If you do not know the location of the Dark Rift after receiving this message, please check the World Map (M).

▲ As shown above, a large notification message will appear alongside a separate smaller one on the bottom-right corner.

▲ World Map (M) mark. Clicking on the Dark Rift mark will guide you to the appearance area. Keep in mind, only “You” can see it.

3. Combat

What if you’ve confirmed the appearance of a boss? Well it’s time to fight them of course!

When you are in combat with a boss, other Adventurers cannot see or attack “You”. (Summons and Pets included)
So don’t worry about interruptions and please just enjoy the intense combat between you and the boss.

If a boss does appear, they can only see and attack “You”. So if you’re not ready, you can take time to make your preparations before attacking.

Additionally, since there is no death penalty for dying against a boss that spawns from the Dark Rift, you can challenge them freely!

※ The bosses from the Dark Rift do not naturally die or despawn.

※ There will be a maximum of 10 world bosses from the Dark Rift spawned. You need to defeat the previous one in order to have a new world boss from the Dark Rift spawn.

※ Bosses cannot be attacked during Conquest/Node War, so please move to a server without a Conquest/Node War in-progress to engage in a boss combat.

4. Rewards

Once you’ve defeated a boss from the Dark Rift, it’s time for some rewards.

You can obtain two different items from looting a boss: Box of the Dead and Dark Spirit’s Greed. There are three types of Box of the Dead: Box of the Desperate Dead, Box of the Distorted Dead, and Box of the Silent Dead, and they all contain various accessories. The Dark Spirit’s Greed can be collected and exchanged for other items.

▲ Make sure to loot the boss monsters you’ve defeated!

Based on the difficulty, you can obtain a Box of the Silent/Distorted/Desperate Dead. The items that can be obtained from each type of the Box of the Dead are shown below.

▲ If you obtain a Box of the Dead, test your luck by opening it.

Depending on the number of Dark Spirit’s Greed, you can exchange them with a NPC for various items.

Item Exchanged Amount
Kzarka’s Latent Aura x1 Dark Spirit’s Greed x2
Nouver’s Latent Aura x1

This wraps up the announcement of Dark Rift. We hope to have you instructed you sufficiently and we hope you enjoy fighting your very own boss!

Thank you.

Executive Producer's Letter Concerning Dark Rift

Copied from an article "Working Towards a Comprehensive Black Desert Online", published 13 February 2019 15:00.

Greetings Adventurers,

This is Jae-hee Kim, the Executive Producer in charge of development for Black Desert Online.

A whole month has already passed since the start of this new year.

As January was the opening month of 2019, we tried to introduce variety of new contents during the last month to make the journey even more enjoyable.

We have introduced countless updates during the past, yet the last couple of months were especially filled with various important patches.

We introduced new contents without rest including Bartali’s Adventure Log, War Hero, Dark Rift, Shadow Arena, Central Market, Privacy Mode, removal of weight for silver, decrease of the variety of loot dropped during the early stages, removal of the Node Connection requirement for trading fish, revealing the enhancement success rates, Devour, and Territory War which is currently under development. (Some of the contents are yet to be released in NA/EU)

I decided to present this Dev Note today as I believed there may be many Adventurers out there who’d like to learn more about the newly introduced contents and the intentions behind them.

Dark Rift

Requirement: A family with at least 1 awakened character atLv.56 or higher.

Note: appears at random times, no penalty upon death, Boss HP does not reset

"How can we make defeating monsters less tedious?"

"How can we deliver an intense game experience within a short amount of time?"

"How can we help Adventurers that cannot play for a long time to grow their characters?"

As mentioned from the previous DEV NOTE: Executive Producer’s New Year Greetings, one of the solutions we came up with other than the introduction of Shadow Arena was the Dark Rift.

Majority of Adventures focus on defeating monsters and enhancing their gear and accessories in Black Desert Online. However, this eventually led to ‘boring’ monster hunts to become a necessary process and resulted in a tedious game experience.

In order to lessen the stress, we are trying to diversify play patterns in ‘defeating monsters’. Instead of repeating the same activity over and over, Adventurers can now enjoy Shadow Arena whenever they want. We also wished to provide an opportunity to earn a certain amount of gain without relying on defeating monsters. This why we developed the Dark Rift.

Dark Rift will open for anyone who completed the quest '[Awakening Complete] Memories of the Past'.

Upon completing the quest above, Dark Rifts will be open and boss monsters will be unleashed. If an adventurer does not defeat a boss monster from the rift, there can be a maximum of 10 boss monsters awaiting on the list and they will not disappear over time. After defeating a boss monster, the next appearance will be appear at random within one week.

By ensuring that the boss monsters do not disappear even after time passes, Adventurers who can’t be online every day still have a chance to defeat the monsters when they can and claim rewards.

Defeating the boss monsters spawned from the rift is no easy task, but there’s no penalty upon death and the monster’s HP does not reset. So even if the character needs better gear and advanced control, the boss monster can be defeated at some point in time if they keep trying.

Furthermore, we are currently planning to make the boss monster weaker as time passes. If the boss monster is left undefeated until the very end, Adventurers with lower AP will be able to defeat the boss. However, the rewards will remain the same.

There are many ways to enjoy the Dark Rift.

- Experienced Adventurers with a lot of play time can start the combat immediately.

- Adventurers who can only play for a certain amount of time every day can defeat all of the boss monsters at once and wrap up the day.

- Adventurers who play for a short amount of time can still earn a certain amount of silver just by clearing a Dark Rift.

- Weekend Adventurers can defeat all the boss monsters that have already spawned from the rift to start off their weekend.

We have created a new accessory box named ‘Boxes of the Dead’. It is intended to provide many yet various accessories for Adventurers. An increased in the amount of supply will decrease the market prices of accessories. This will provide more opportunities for those who want to enhance at a lower cost.

Items coming up on the market depended on specific events before. However, this new content can supply more items and reduce the amount of time defeating monsters to obtain a certain item. Therefore, even if Adventurers can’t obtain an item by defeating monsters, This is another stable way to obtain the item they want.

Along with the accessory box, Adventurers can receive bonus items such as Memory Fragment, Black Stones, Ancient Spirit’s Powder, and Dark Spirit’s Greed. Later we will update various boss monsters in other territories to make the content rich and more enjoyable.

Our primary goal for the first half of 2019 is to ensure our new and returning Adventurers to have an easier time getting settle down in the game. Also, we’d like to provide opportunities for those who can play for a limited amount of time to still earn a certain amount of silvers so that every Adventurer can play and enjoy together.

Currently, we have been constantly tuning the level of difficulty in order to improve fun factors by increasing value and adjusting the number of obtainable junk items in the early stages of the game. We are aiming to lessen the stress on new Adventurers who don’t have enough inventory and weight in order to provide a better experience.

Along with these content updates, we will constantly develop and make improvements on existing contents including new gears, Node/Conquest War, Horse Training and Life contents such as Trade for experienced Adventurers.

Thank you.

  • The boss monsters only appear to specific adventurers, therefore they can only be seen by the designated adventurer (other adventurers cannot attack your boss monster).

  • You can obtain accessories through the boxes dropped by these bosses.

  • No penalties will be applied for getting killed by these boss monsters.

  • The bosses from the Dark Rift do not naturally die or despawn.

    • These boss monsters will not disappear when you switch characters, change servers, or log out.

    • You cannot attack these boss monsters during a Node War/Conquest War. When they appear, you must move to another server where a Node War/Conquest War is not in progress.

  • You will need to complete the newly added quest [Awakening Complete] Memories of the Past quest to open your Dark Rift.

    • You need to have completed the Awakening Quest of your class to obtain the [Awakening Complete] Memories of the Past from the Black Spirit.
