Top Rated Mice Gamers Love

I love my gaming gear. I hunt down the best armor and weapons I can find. Run to timbuktu and back, just to get that coveted weapon, so I can gleefully assault the bad guys and conquer foes far and near!

Online gaming is fun, but do you ever feel like your mouse hand needs help? Even worse, do you experience wrist or hand pain after long battles? MMORPG players play an average of 26.6 hours per week, and spend 1 to 5 hours playing each day. Source: 2017 study

Best Gaming Mouse Features:
  • Comfort: shape, size, and design is a key component to gamer happiness
  • Ergonomic: pay close attention to the shape of the mouse. Will it allow your hand to rest in a natural position, without bending the wrist? Are the buttons easy to reach, or will you have to bend fingers at an odd angle?
  • Programmable Buttons: look for extra programmable mouse buttons that can be mapped to keyboard strokes and utilities like volume control
  • Software: gaming mouse software not only controls the RGB glowing colors, but many important features like DPI and scroll speed.
  • Weights and Balance: Do you prefer a heavier or lighter mouse? With mouse weights you can achieve just the right balance and feel.
  • Macros: Look for macro features that automatically press multiple keyboard buttons for you at the same time or in a sequence. Using mouse macros inside most MMORPG games is against the Terms of Service. So be sure you don’t accidentally use this during play time or you may get your account banned.
  • DPI: Higher DPI means more mouse pointer travel for smaller hand movement. High numbers make the pointer practically teleport across the screen with little hand movement. Higher DPI becomes especially important for players who play on large screens.
  • Polling Rate: Higher Polling rate means the CPU requests the position of the mouse more frequently. This can be good or bad depending upon the machine you are using. High-end gaming PCs can take higher polling rates, but dinosaur PCs should avoid them.

Hand & Wrist Pain During Gaming

Gamer Wrist & Hand Aches
Hand and wrist pain is common for many gamers. This is because it’s harmful for the wrist and fingers to make repetitive movements for too long of a duration. Proper wrist posture while gaming is very important if you plan on playing for an extended period. If at all possible, try to remember to get up and take a short break. (5 minutes every hour.) Stretch out your fingers and wrists.

Many gaming mice advertise that they are “ergonomic.” It’s important that the mouse is ergonomic and doesn’t bend the wrists or fingers in an unnatural way.

Carpal Tunnel

Mother Claire: “Proper Gaming Posture!”

Mother Claire Mother Claire has lamented on your poor gaming posture. She cares for all her MMORPG children and wants no more wrist injuries! She said, “Develop a smarter battle plan and use good posture, stretching, and breaks to keep wrists and hands free from pain and injury!”

Wrist Injury While Gaming?
Pain occurs after gaming, because repetitive finger and wrist motion can cause tendons to swell, putting extra pressure on the median nerve in the carpal tunnel of the wrist. Swelling is built up inside the wrist, and if it’s not relieved, creates numbness, tingling, burning, and/or pain. This is called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. It can lead to serious and permanent hand disability.

How to Keep a Wrist in Alignment While Gaming
If we can prevent awkward movement of the wrist, we can reduce the risk of Carpal Tunnel and hand/wrist injury. The key is to keep your elbow at a 90° angle and your arm and wrist in a straight line. Use whatever you have at your disposal to achieve this. You can raise and lower your seat, use wrist pillows or pads, or raise and lower the table. This is the normal recommendations given for traditional gaming mice, which have an ergonomic shape.

Hand and Wrist Stretching for Gamers

Interval Timer for Wrist and Hand Stretches during Gaming
Image Credit: Microsoft: Interval Timer by Jalex

Stretching hands, fingers, and wrists can help prevent injury from forming. There is allot of good info already out there on how to do this, but I will include a helpful video below created especially for professional gamers.

Forgetting to Stretch Every Hour?
It’s easy to get caught up inside a game, and before you know it, an hour has snuck up on you. If you find yourself gaming for longer than an hour, without taking breaks, set up an app with a timer to remind you to take a gaming break. If you need an easy app for this, check out the free one from Microsoft: Interval Timer by Jalex

Interval Timer for Gaming

Pause with Hand-held Timers
Or if you prefer a physical timer, there are some nice interval timers on Amazon, like the one from Gymboss. That one is pretty cheap and basic, but it’s highly rated and gets the job done. Of course, there are fancier, more expensive timers. Use anything, if it will give you that important reminder to pause and stretch during a gaming session.

Gaming Mouse vs Regular Mouse

The biggest difference between traditional mice and gaming mice is DPI. Gaming mice usually come with a broader range of available DPI that can be fine tuned. In most gaming mice, DPI can be easily switched, depending upon which game is being played. For example, a sniper game might require a more slow and steady aim, which would require a lower DPI setting. For games that require lighting quick camera turns, with little mouse movement, a higher DPI is needed. Higher DPI is also good for gaming systems that use larger than normal screens, like big screen TVs and large monitors. Gaming mice typically have a very high maximum DPI. For example, a normal mouse has 1,000 DPI. Gaming mice, however, usually have maximum DPI ranges of 7,000 to 16,400.

What’s a Vertical Gaming Mouse?

A vertical mouse is a type of mouse that allows the user to relieve pressure from the palm side of the wrist, which would alleviate the soft underside of the carpal tunnel, which is so susceptible to pressure, because there are no major bones protecting underneath. Please see the Carpal Tunnel diagram for a clearer picture of how this type of mouse could help. Usually, vertical mice are not labeled “gaming mice”. Most of the ones that say “Vertical Gaming Mouse” have the same DPI and normal features of regular mice, so be careful.

But I did find one “Vertical Gaming Mouse” that has a higher than normal max DPI of 4,800. I will link it here from Amazon, for those of you that are interested. Unfortunately it has very few reviews, but the ones there are good so far. You can try it out, and if you don’t like it, can return it within 30 days

Another Vertical Gaming Mouse Benefit
The major benefit of buying any vertical mouse is that it forces you to put your wrist in a different position while gaming or working. I don’t imagine gaming would be very familiar with a vertical mouse, however, it would be perfect for those who use their mouse all day long for work, gaming, and internet. Having an extra vertical mouse would give your wrist a rest from its normal gaming position, while you pay the bills, work, etc.

Gaming Mouse Accessories

If you’re considering gaming mice, you might also want to check out some related gaming gear. All are highly rated and popular choices on Amazon. I also included a well reviewed upright mouse. If you try one out, let me know how it goes! It has a lower DPI (1,600) of a more traditional mouse.
