BDO Underwater Gathering yields uncommon items from corals and other underwater objects. The items gathered are used in all kinds of recipes. The majority of recipes involve ship and ship part building.
There are also daily sailing quests on Oquilla’s Eye and other areas that require underwater gathering.
Anyone that has dove into the water will tell you swimming is a challenge in BDO. Without proper gear, most players steer far clear of it, if they can. This guide will give you info on swimming gear that helps make underwater gathering more enjoyable.
Underwater Gathering Highlights:
- Requires a hoe (Magical Hoe or Manos Hoe is best, depending on Gathering Mastery level)
- Underwater objects can be tricky to gather from. Making the gather UI bubble pop up is part of the challenge. Some corals are better gathered from the top or one side. For example, the gather UI of Tridana Giant Clam is located on one side only. If you’ll approach it from the other side or from the top, it can’t be gathered. Try checking all sides, if a gather UI doesn’t immediately appear.

Swimming Mechanics & Tips
I frequently find myself hopping into the water and missing the land or a dock I’m trying to get to! Do you have the same troubles? Remember that there are key presses to swim up or down.
E = SWIM STRAIGHT UP
Q = SWIM DOWN
F = RECOVER STAMINA
TIP: When you use the Q key you dive straight down. If you need more of a diagonal downward direction, then use your W key. Q+W will not work.
Surface Swimming:
- You can Auto Swim on the surface of the water by pressing T, after right clicking anywhere on your map.
- You must be on the surface to Auto Swim.
- You can press T key without an auto path to make your character swim straight ahead.
- Sprint on the water surface by pressing Shift key. Your Stamina must be over 300.
- If your Stamina is below 100, pressing T key to Auto Swim will only activate the motion to recover Stamina, and your character will start swimming again if the Stamina recovers to over 1,000.
- Use the Escape key, when you get stuck. Select “Escape” button that looks like a hand. It will put you at the closest “Safe” Zone. Could be a node. Often, if you are by a beach, it will put you there.
Diving and Underwater Swimming:
- A breath meter appears and you will begin to loose breath.
- When breath meter reaches 0, you will begin to drown and slowly rise to the surface.
- Drowning by loosing breath, will not kill your character, but you will loose all ability to control your character.
- Swimming and floating on the surface consumes Stamina.
- At 0 Stamina, you will loose all ability to move and will be stuck. Recover Stamina slowly over time by pressing F key.
It should also maybe be added that if you are gathering you seem to loose the ability to move if you use the last of your energy.
Why would you use a Lucky or Magic hoe until your gathering is 600? The other hoes may be slower, but they provide mastery, speed and drop rate. The magic and lucky hoe both just say they help with time.
The Magic and Lucky have a special Luck bonus attached to them, hence the Lucky prefix. This bonus makes it more likely to get uncommon, rare, and very rare drops, whereas the Loggia, Dosotter, and Manos ones only get 30% more of what you get normally. The Luck bonus from Magic and Lucky is also seperate from your normal Luck stat, and I’m fairly sure that they stack with eachother, but I could be wrong on that. Either way, the Luck stat that you get will evidently give 600 mastery’s worth of better drop rate, based on this guide. Also… Read more »
Hello, thanks a lot for all your guides !
I think this guide could include the fact that Corsairs characters are even better for underwater gathering (thanks to their “Sea lung” passive):
It could also be worth mentionning the current event Bubbly Diving Suit (+30s breathing).
Thanks for the tips!
once under water, change servers and you will get your stam and breath back to go over what you just did again. rinse and repeat. this works for console
Thanks for the tip!
Item Collection Scrolls should be removed, this is not only trolling new players, but it does nothing for gathering.
