Fishing Mastery was introduced into Black Desert Online in NA on 9-4-19. Players earn Fishing Mastery levels as they obtain Fishing Life Skill ranks and Fishing Mastery or Life Mastery Gear.
Fishing Mastery Benefits:
- +Chance of catching “Prize Catch Fish” These are orange grade fish worth 1 million to 100 million Silver.
- +Prize Catch Harpoon Level
- +Chance of fishing up Ancient Relic Crystal Shards
- highest value fish (50-100m) are from harpooning
- highest value fish from fishing is worth 15m

Fishing Mastery & Orange Grade Fish, Oh My!
Anglers get ready for some serious fishing fun with the addition of Fishing Mastery! Fish mongers now have a bigger incentive to level their Fishing Life Skill. With high Fishing Mastery and Life Mastery levels, you can potentially earn twice as much as you used to.
Let’s look at a few such “Prize Catch ” fish, found by harpooning:
- Requiem Shark: 75 million Silver
- Giant Black Squid: 50 million Silver
- Ghost Whale: 100 million Silver
You sell these bastions of the sea at the vendor, so you don’t have to worry about them expiring, but they also can’t be increased in value via a Trade Manager or Imperial Fish Trader.
Fish that are trade items can be increased in value via bargaining with Traders and distance bonuses or Imperial Traders.

Life Mastery Gear Enhancement
Life Mastery clothes and accessories can be improved by enhancement, using Black Gems crafted from Black Gem Fragments.
- Life Mastery gear can be upgraded to PEN (V)
- Enhancement levels increase the Life Mastery given
- Life Mastery gear enhancement with Black Gems does not use the traditional Failstack system. Enhancement Chance is always a set amount no matter how much you fail.
- Enhancement with Black Gems “have a higher success rate than the previous enhancement methods.” (70% PRI, 40% DUO, 30% TRI for greed grade.) Although it seems from player reports that RNG is a-foot!
Black Gem Fragment
Black Gem Fragments are used to create Black Gems and then Concentrated Magical Black Gems.
Obtain By Gathering:
- Mining
- Barehanded Gathering (excludes Golem gathering)
- Hoe Gathering
- Fluid/Blood Collecting
- Tanning (Skinning)
- Butchering (Hunting with a Matchlock/Sniper Rifle and then butchering will provide Black Gem Fragments as well.)
- Lumbering
NOTE: The rates of fragments from chopping/sapping trees and mining is lower than butchering/bleeding animals or gathering herbs.

Why is there no mention of Blue Shark? I doubted for a while it was in game but there’s a comment on BDO codex from 2021 where someone caught one in Margoria Middle, and i also found a comment from 9 months ago on a youtube video where someone said they caught one in Margoria North. It’s a harpoonable orange fish.
Also no mention of Ribbonfish, also harpoonable orange fish, which can be caught in the Odylitta sea. I just got the knowledge, took me 7 catches.
