Epheria Caravel and Improved Epheria Sailboat were introduced in the The Great Expedition Update on 23 October 2019. Both ships are upgrades from Epheria Sailboat and require an Epheria Sailboat to craft.

Top Benefits of Upgrading Your Epheria Sailboat:

  • Cannons are faster and “Captain” controlled (You control the cannon fire by RMB or LMB)
  • 2 cannons on each side (2x cannons for increased damage)

“Captain” controlled cannons are a huge improvement over the “player” controlled cannons of lower tier ships, like Epheria Sailboat. Without captain controlled cannons, you have to stop your boat, release the wheel, and run to the cannon, hoping the sea monster gets within firing range. (Or have a friend on board firing the cannon, while you steer the ship.)

All the ships upgraded from Epheria Sailboat allow you to sail (move your ship) and shoot cannons at the same time.

Upgrade to Improved Epheria Sailboat:

  • no improvements to ship stats besides improved cannons
  • less time cost (materials are more easily obtainable via worker nodes and processing.)

Upgrade to Epheria Caravel:

  • 5,000 more Weight Limit (twice as much LT)
  • 20 more Cabin rooms for Sailors (3x the Cabin space)
  • 5 more Inventory
  • 100,000 more Max Rations
  • greater time cost (requires more planning and gathering of rare materials from Barter and Sea Monster drops)

Best Barter & Trade Ships

Improved Epheria Sailboat and Epheria Caravel are best for barter and trade because they have better Inventory and Weight Limit compared to the battle line of ships (Epheria Frigate and its upgrades). The ships that are upgraded from the Epheria Sailboat have less cannons and lower Speed, Acceleration, Turn, and Brake.

My Experience Sea Monster Hunting with Improved Epheria Sailboat
Improved Epheria Sailboat can be used for light sea monster hunting, but it has less cannon power. (It has 4 less cannons than the Improved Epheria Frigate and its upgrades.) Four extra cannons equals a lot more damage and faster Sea Monster hunting.

In my experience, the Improved Epheria Sailboat works well enough with a +5 or greater enhanced blue cannon when hunting Hungry and Young Sea Monsters and ghost ships. The adult Sea Monsters, however, take time to kill.

Improved Epheria Sailboat vs Epheria Caravel: Materials

The materials for the Caravel require bartered goods and Sea Monster drops, unlike the Improved Epheria Sailboat.

Chances are, you already have a lot of the materials for the Improved Epheria Sailboat through nodes, gathering, and quests.

Which Ship Should I Upgrade To First?

Upgrade to Improved Epheria Sailboat, if you don’t have a friend that can help you with sea monster hunting. It’s more difficult to hunt sea monsters solo with an Epheria Sailboat. An Improved Epheria Sailboat helps in fighting the sea monsters that drop the parts needed for the Caravel.

Upgrade directly to an Epheria Caravel if you have a friend that can help you with sea monsters. It will save you some time and cost, if you can skip the Improved Epheria Sailboat and upgrade directly to Epheria Caravel.

NOTE: The material costs below assume the best level of Processing. (2.5 average yield per process recipe completion)

NOTE #2: Quantities below are the FULL cost, excluding Ravinia’s quest line, which yields half of many materials for Caravel.

*NOTE: Plywood Hardener doesn’t seem to follow the usual rate of 2.5 per craft. The rate seems to be about 1.5, from my own testing with Artisan 9 Alchemy on 9-16-22. You will probably need more than what is listed in the chart above. I got 35 Plywood Hardener from 21 recipes. I’m not sure if this is a temporary bug or working as intended. Ouch!

How to Upgrade Epheria Sailboat

To upgrade your sailboat to the Improved Epheria Sailboat or the Caravel, vist the <Wharf Manager> in Veila, Port Epheria, or Illya Island. Take out your sailboat and remove any gear that is currently being worn by your ship. All ship gear must be fully repaired in Durability and Max Durability. Put your ship back into the wharf.

All ship parts and upgrade materials must be in your inventory. When going to purchase the ship permit, make sure you have enough silver in your inventory. Port Epheria doesn’t have access to the Warehouse.

See the charts below for detailed information on how to acquire materials.
