Epheria Caravel and Improved Epheria Sailboat were introduced in the The Great Expedition Update on 23 October 2019. Both ships are upgrades from Epheria Sailboat and require an Epheria Sailboat to craft.
Top Benefits of Upgrading Your Epheria Sailboat:
- Cannons are faster and “Captain” controlled (You control the cannon fire by RMB or LMB)
- 2 cannons on each side (2x cannons for increased damage)
“Captain” controlled cannons are a huge improvement over the “player” controlled cannons of lower tier ships, like Epheria Sailboat. Without captain controlled cannons, you have to stop your boat, release the wheel, and run to the cannon, hoping the sea monster gets within firing range. (Or have a friend on board firing the cannon, while you steer the ship.)
All the ships upgraded from Epheria Sailboat allow you to sail (move your ship) and shoot cannons at the same time.

Improved Epheria Sailboat vs Epheria Caravel
Which Ship Should I Upgrade To First?
In my opinion, you should skip the Improved Epheria Sailboat and upgrade directly to the Epheria Caravel. The Improved Epheria Sailboat must be upgraded to the Epheria Caravel anyway.
The Improved Epheria only upgrades your cannons while the Caravel upgrades much more – including weight which is important for Bartering. The logs required to craft the Improved Epheria Sailboat must be actively gathered from trees with a Lumbering Axe. This alone is a huge deterrent unless you like to gather.
It seems like a waste of time and materials to upgrade the Epheria Sailboat to the Improved Epheria Sailboat.
My Experience Sea Monster Hunting with Improved Epheria Sailboat
Improved Epheria Sailboat can be used for light sea monster hunting, but it has less cannon power. It has 2 less cannons than the Caravel and 4 less cannons than the Improved Epheria Frigate and its upgrades.
In my experience, the Improved Epheria Sailboat works well enough when hunting Hungry and Young Sea Monsters, ghost ships, and small battleships.

Epheria Sailboat Upgrade Materials Comparison
NOTE: The material costs below assume the average Processing proc rate of 2.5 per craft (based on Processing level). Plywood Hardener doesn’t follow the usual proc rate of 2.5 per craft.
NOTE #2: Quantities below are the FULL cost, excluding Ravinia’s quest line, which yields half of many materials for Caravel.

Epheria Caravel Materials
Upgrading Epheria Sailboat to Epheria Caravel requires materials that can be obtained via Barter, sailing quests, and sea monster hunting.
Obtaining Epheria Caravel Materials:
- Sea Monster Hunting: obtain Caravel mats from Hekaru, Ocean Stalker, Young Hekaru, Young Ocean Stalker, Sea of Silence Young Candidum, Young Nineshark, and Young Black Rust
- Rare procs from gathering or worker nodes (various tree saps)
- Regional Sea Monster Quests
- Spend Crow Coin at the Crow Coin Shop
- Barter with [Level 2 to 5] Sea Trade Goods and use Ship Material Refresh
- Sailing/Barter Quests:
- Great Expedition Main Sailing Questline (Vigorous Velia)
- Ravinia’s 7 Day Quest Line
- Repeatable Sailing/Barter Quests
With just a glance, you can see it may take days to obtain everything you need. Depending upon your luck, it could be many weeks.

Old Epheria Ship Gear – Enhancing
Each piece of Old Epheria ship gear for the Caravel upgrade must be enhanced to +10, at 100 Max Durability, and fully repaired in order to upgrade your Epheria Sailboat to a Caravel.
Purchase Old Epheria ship gear from Philaberto Falasi in Port Epheria for 3-4 million silver each.
Old Epheria gear enhancement from +1 to +10 is 100% guaranteed, so failstacks aren’t required. A total of 10 Tidal Black Stones are required to enhance each ship gear to +10, costing 100 Max Durability.
Recovering Max Durability
Max Durability can be recovered at most Blacksmiths, Wharf Managers, and Stable Keepers.
1 Old Epheria gear = 10 Max Durability (cost 3-4 mill)
1 Memory Fragment = 5 Max Durability (cost 2.5-3.5 mill)
Purchase 10 Old Epheria gear (costing 3.5 mill. silver each) to repair 100 Max Durability. Purchase Old Epheria gear at
You can choose to use Memory Fragments instead of ship gear, but it’s not cost effective as 2 Memory Fragments is more expensive than 1 Old Epheria ship gear.
How to Upgrade Epheria Sailboat
To upgrade your sailboat to the Improved Epheria Sailboat or the Caravel, visit the <Wharf Manager> in Veila, Port Epheria, or Illya Island. Be sure to empty the ship of gear, goods, and sailors. Check the ship into the wharf and choose the Upgrade Ship button. Use the arrow key near the ship’s picture to select the upgrade you desire: Improved Epheria Sailboat or Epheria Caravel.
All ship parts and upgrade materials must be in your inventory. All Old Epheria ship gear must be fully repaired in Durability and Max Durability. Hit the Upgrade button. Congrats on your new ship!

Epheria Caravel Gear (Green)
If you ever want to upgrade to a Carrack, you’ll need to enhance greed-grade Caravel gear to +10 and use it to craft the blue-grade Caravel gear.
Purchase green Epheria Caravel ship gear from Philaberto Falasi in Port Epheria for 7-9 million silver each.
Enhancing Advice
Green Caravel ship gear does not downgrade when you fail an enhancement. Enhance the Caravel Gear using Tidal Black Stones to at least +5 without using failstacks. Each enhancement attempt from +1Â to +5 costs 1 Tidal Black Stone and subtracts 5 Max Durability.
From +6Â to +10 each enhancement attempt costs 2 Tidal Black Stones and subtracts 10 Max Durability. Use failstacks to increase your success chance, continue to YOLO it, or force enhance. Force enhance costs more stones and Max Durability loss but is 100% guaranteed. Also keep in mind that 5 failed attempts = a 100% guaranteed enhancement with the Agris Essence meter (6 failed attempts for +10). Weigh the costs and consider which method is the most cost effective for you.
Repairing Max Durability
1 Memory Fragment = 5 Max Durability (costs 2.5 -3.5 mill)
1 Green Caravel Gear = 10 Max Durability (costs 7-9 mill)
Use Memory Fragments if possible to repair Max Durability as the cost of 2 Memory Fragments is likely lower than the cost of 1 green Caravel gear.

Great guide but the quantities for Plywood Hardener needs to be adjusted as there is no multi-proc. It’s 1 per and that’s it. (recent Alch change?) So it’d be
Yup! Basically makes improved harder than caravel for some reason, because BDO logic.
I did this fine with 200 reagent, 600 knots, 600 trace, and 800 sap. Got me to 298 plywood hardener.
I’m only pro 9 alch as well.
I am not getting any barters [Island Tree Coated Plywood] for [Pirate Gold Coin] they are all [Cron Castle Gold Coins]

The Permit of Epheria Caravel is 400,000,000, not 400,00,000
Hello! 🙂 Thanks for spotting that! Fixed.
Can I upgrade the Improved Sailboat to Caravel later? Cuz that amount of materials needed for the Caravel is too much to gather at once.
Hello 🙂 Yes, you can upgrade from Improved to Caravel later. The cost for Caravel doesn’t decrease, however, if you are upgrading to Caravel from Improved. So you’re actually paying more in the long run, but if you don’t have a friend with a ship to help you skip the Improved and upgrade directly to Caravel, then I recommend upgrading to Improved first. Step by step wins the stairs. Have fun! 🙂
Hello 🙂 I just tested this and Plywood Hardener does seem to have it’s own unique rate. Thanks for the heads up. I made a note of it in the guide, but didn’t change the numbers, as I’m not sure if that is working as intended or a temporary bug. Also, I’m not sure of the exact rate at this time. Seems to be 1.5%?
Cant find Grade 3 reform stones in any refinery now. AFAIK from google, they plan to remove them, so they cant be created any more. Saddly the recipe for ultimate ones stay the same, so now only way to get ultimate reform stones it the central market. Hope they fix it somehow…
Thanks for catching that old info. It’s updated now.
