BDO Gear for Sale at an NPC

In this BDO Gear Progression Guide, you will learn about the best gear progression for weapons, armor, and accessories. We’ll start at beginner level gear and go all the way to end game Boss gear. Black Desert Online makes Renown (aka Gear Score) very important. With the right armor, weapons, and enhancements you can easily fight enemies higher level than you. Without the right gear, you will have a difficult time progressing in the game.

HAPPY BDO Gear Hunting!!

Thanks to BDOPlanner and Gear Calculator for many of the gear set images and info in this guide!

Beginner Gear Basics

BDO Gear Window Armor, weapons, and accessories can be enhanced to increase Defense Points (DP), Attack Points (AP), and many other stats. There are no level restrictions to enhanced gear. Even a level 1 character can wear the best PEN (V) gear.

Gear enhancements, in order of the best and most rare is:
  1. PEN (V) +20
  2. TET (IV) +19
  3. TRI (III) +18
  4. DUO (II) +17
  5. PRI (I) +16
  6. +15 to +1

Armor Basics:
The main benefit to armor is that it offers DP (Defense Points). But many armor pieces include extra stats like Evasion, Weight Limit increases, Damage Reduction, Health Points, etc. Armor can be shared between all your characters by putting them into storage at the Storage Keeper located in most major cities. You could also transfer gear to an Alt via a Farm Wagon (Mounts that have gear on them can only be Remote Collected to their nearest <Stable Keeper>.)

Weapon Basics:
Weapons and Sub-weapons (aka Secondary Weapons) are class specific. Some weapons can be shared with more than one class. The main-hand weapon of Staff, for example, is used by Witches and Wizards. The sub-weapon Steel Dagger is shared between Witch, Wizard, and Ranger. Awakening weapons can only be equipped by characters level 56+ who have completed their class specific Awakened quest line. (Archer is the exception to this rule and he is limited to the beginner Archer Awakening Weapon until level 56.) Awakening weapons cannot be shared with a different class.

Enhanced Gear
You can use quested gear until you reach the more difficult areas in Mediah at around level 55. Recently, they have added enhanced gear to NPC shops. But maybe you are more interested in gambling… erm, I mean attempting gear enhancement yourself. 🙂 If you decide on enhancing, make sure you really research it before diving in. It’s expensive and you can loose silver by choosing to enhance the wrong gear and making beginner mistakes, like not understanding optimal fail stacks for enhancement. With the new Central Market, that is supposed to allow for more free trade, you may be able to find good enhanced gear for a fair price. (Always keep in mind that if there is allot of something up for sale, and it’s not selling well, it may be over-priced or not a good gear option.)

Beginner Gear from NPC’s:
From Patch Notes – 27th February 2019: “Enhanced gears have been newly added to weapon and armor NPC shops in regions of Calpheon and Serendia. Adventurers can now purchase high-grade gear at max Enhancement level that will match the growth rate of your character development through an NPC shop. We hope this will aid in your adventures and training for character growth.”

NOTE: It looks like the Silver cost for this NPC sold gear is more expensive than the Central Market at the moment! Check there first.

Best Weapons for Beginners

BDO Beginner Sub-weapon Dagger

The main and sub-weapons you get from the main story line are sufficient to get you through the beginner zones and even well into Mediah. However, the quest chains can be quite lengthy and you may not even like questing. Or maybe you want even more awesome mass carnage of all evil doers!

For players that don’t want to depend on quested gear, or can afford more, there are many options available. But, we repeatedly see the same 4 weapons in player recommendations.

Top 4 Recommended Main Hand Weapons:

Table updated from: BDO Best Weapons for Leveling Up and Starters (2018)

Duo Ultimate Min AP Max AP Avg AP Ex AP Eff AP Slot Impt Note
Bares 79 83 81 22 99.7 1 All Species
Yuria 84 89 86.5 22 105.2 1 Human Only. 86.5 All else
Rosar 85 90 87.5 0 87.5 2 2 Slots
Kalis 81 95 88 0 88 1 High RS

Which one is best? I’m going to leave that up to you. Green grade weapons just help you get to better weapons. Don’t get too heavily invested in them, as you will want to focus on obtaining a boss main hand ASAP. Don’t enhance green grade past TRI.

Traditionally, players opt for the highest AP, but there are those who swear by Bares “effective AP”, etc. For more info from the pro-Bares camp, visit the guide linked above. They also recommend max Accuracy for a sub-weapon.

Highest AP Sub Weapons (Green Grade for Beginners):
  • Axion Shield: Warrior/Valkyrie/Guardian
  • Steel Dagger: Witch/Wizard/Ranger
  • Jubre Talisman: Sorceress
  • Oros Ornamental Knot: Berserker/Dark Knight
  • Needle Trinket: Tamer
  • White Horn Bow: Musa/Maehwa
  • Estique Kunai/Shuriken: Kunoichi/Ninja
  • Scale Vambrace: Striker/Mystic
  • Ganatte Ra’ghon: Archer
  • Oros Vitclari: Shai

Mainhand – Elsh
Elsh often recommended, but it is a sort of pipe dream because it’s difficult to get. The accuracy and damage to all species buff is the same as the Kzarka boss mainhand. The AP is low, but in later levels you may use your Awakening weapon more, depending on your class, play style, and level. The Elsh accuracy and damage buff will make you do more damage with your Awakened skills. It also has a 5% chance to heal HP on hit. But Elsh weapons are only obtained via one quest ([Boss] Black Spirit and the Giant Imp) and could be challenging to obtain via the Marketplace. Enhancement could be tricky and expensive. Also, Kzarka boss weapons are the easiest boss gear to obtain. So whichever green grade weapon you pick, it probably wont last for long.

BDO Gear: Main Weapon Elsh

Rosar provides 2 crystal slots and has the highest AP of all the green grade weapons. (unless “effective AP” is calculated.)

BDO Beginner Main Weapon Rosar

In my humble opinion, if you aren’t satisfied with the main quest line gear, just buy an enhanced weapon that’s cheap off of the Marketplace.

All Mainhand Recommendations:

  • Elsh: Extra Damage to All, High Accuracy, 1 Crystal slot
  • Rosar: High AP, 2 Crystal slots
  • Kalis: High AP, 1 Crystal slot
  • Azwell: Medium AP, 1 Crystal slot, Good Accuracy
  • Krea: Medium AP, 2 Crystal slots
  • Yuria: 1 Crystal Slot, Increased Damage to Humans (Good for PVP)
  • Bares: high “effective AP” (Extra Damage to All Species), 1 Crystal slot

Best Beginner Armor

The armor you receive from the main story quest is good enough until you are around level 54. Here is a sneak peek at the Black Spirit quests that are given after main story line completions. The rewards are in parenthesis:

NOTE: Did you notice some of the rewards are actually used to upgrade an old piece of quested gear? Be sure to hang onto quested gear until you are sure you don’t want the upgraded version.

Hate Questing?
I do recommend you do the main quest line at least. The developers periodically put new content out that requires it. (Like the Fairy, and different events). It also provides Inventory slots and 3 pets. But if you absolutely don’t like questing, you can follow either of the recommendations below. Armor pieces can be upgraded to +5 without chance of failure. Grunil and Heve are the most recommended armor sets.

Grunil Armor Set:

  • 2 Crystal Sockets:
Allows you to socket higher attack speed, movement speed, and evasion.
  • Powerful Set Effects:
2 piece set effect: +5 AP
3 piece set effect: +150 HP
4 piece set effect: +2 AP
BDO Beginner Gear: Grunil Armor at the Marketplace

Heve Armor Set:

  • 2 Crystal Sockets:
Allows you to socket higher attack speed, movement speed, and evasion.
  • Powerful Set Effects:
    2 piece set effect: +250HP
    3 piece set effect: +50HP
BDO Beginner Gear: Heve Armor at the Marketplace
BDO Roaring Magical Armor

NOTE: You can replace your chest piece with Roaring Magical Armor, which is possible after completing the main story quest. At level 52, the Black Spirit will give you the quest Magic Armor Exchange I, which is the first in a series of 4 upgrade quests for your Dim Magical Armor. Roaring Magical Armor is like having a DUO Ultimate chest and comes with 2 sockets, +50 HP, Accuracy: 20, Evasion: 100, Damage Reduction: 38.

Beginner Accessories

For beginner accessories, it is recommended that you prioritize AP over everything else. Wait to enhance accessories because accessories are destroyed when enhancement fails and it’s expensive to fill all 6 accessory slots. You will get some AP accessories from the Main quest line. You can also just use the best cheap AP ones available (Bares). Don’t get too hung up on accessories as a beginner. They don’t have much bang for their buck. When you are ready to head into Mediah, at around level 51, your accessory set will soon be replaced by the Asula Accessory Set. This is the best unenhanced accessory set in the game and will last a long time. You can obtain them via questing in Calpheon, but it’s more work to do it that way. View Asula Set drop location maps and quest details in our Asula Guide.

You can find cheap, green-grade, crystals to place in gear sockets for added Attack and Movement Speed.

Gear Progression (Calpheon level 45 to 50)

BDO Boss Witch Hunting quest

To obtain Dim Magical Sub-weapon and Dim Magical Armor, you must complete the Calpheon main story line that leads up to While preparing for Mediah or Looking for Adventurers. Press O key then Main tab.

You are also required to complete the Black Spirit quest lines Six Steps for Personal Growth, which only requires you to reach certain levels (level 51+).

While in Calpheon, you will be able to upgrade your sub-weapon twice to gain a sub-weapon of Sealed Magical Power. You also have the option of doing the upgrades in Mediah, after completing some of the main quest line there.

For accessories, don’t waste too much time on them in Calpheon, since they will all be replaced in Mediah with the Asula Accessory Set.

All Dim Armor upgrades and the rest of the Dim sub-weapon upgrades take place in Mediah.

Root Treant Accessory Set: NPC Vendor

BDO Boss Scroll Quests

The Root Treant Accessory set is easily purchased from Grandus in Calpheon City.
He is the <Armor Vendor> located near the Northern <Storage Keeper>.
The set gives a nice bonus to Weight Limit: +150 LT and has a ton of Accuracy. This set has higher AP than unenhanced Bares, but is lower AP than most other beginner sets, like Jarrett’s. But it’s good enough to move from Calpheon into Mediah, if you enjoy a challenge.

This gear set provides 85 AP and 115 DP. You can venture into Mediah with this set, or stay in Calpheon and try to upgrade some more. I will detail possible Calpheon gear upgrades below. The easiest hunting zone in Mediah (Abandoned Iron Mine) has a gear recommendation of 75 AP and 110 DP.

Dim Magical Sub-weapon Levels

Dim Magical sub-weapons are obtained after completing the Calpheon main story quest line. Press O key and Main tab to view your progress.

*** You can now leave Calpheon before upgrading your Dim sub-weapon. You will be able to upgrade it in Mediah, by talking to Black Spirit and completing his quest, called Cleansing the Lava Cave. This quest will become available after you complete the main Mediah story quests relating to Omar Lava Cave. ***

World of Enemies Quest Series

The quest series below are optional in order to obtain the upgrade for the Dim Sub-weapon in Calpheon. You can travel into Media, and complete a quest to kill 100 Omar Lava Cave mobs instead.

Magic Sub-weapon Exchange in Calpheon:

(You get the quest from the Black Spirit after completing some of the Mediah main quest line, after the Omar Lava Cave quests.) Cleansing the Lava Cave requires you to kill 100 lava mobs.

Dim Magical Armor Levels

Dim Magical Armor is a reward for completing the quest While preparing for Mediah. This quest occurs in Calpheon and is at the end of the main story quest line from Black Spirit. Press O key and Main tab to view your progress. All upgrade quests for Dim Armor occur in Mediah.

Treant Spirit’s Accessory Set: Drop

BDO Boss Scroll Quests

Here is another accessory option that’s not neccessary, but you may have fun obtaining them anyway. The Treant Spirit’s Accessory set is obtained by hunting in SW Calpheon.
The set gives a nice bonus to Weight Limit: +130 LT.
This set trades Accuracy for AP compared to the Root Treant set.

Loure’s Lost Armor Set

This is a nice armor set, but it’s not neccessary. It’s optional for those who want more AP and DP before venturing into Mediah.

Calpheon Quested Gear with Treant Spirit's Accessory Gear Set

This gear set has 97 AP and 132 DP. You can increase the DP to 144, when you complete the Calpheon main quest line and acquire Dim Magical Armor. This gear set provides a gear score that would allow you to venture into Mediah. The easiest hunting zone in Mediah (Abandoned Iron Mine) has a gear recommendation of 75 AP and 110 DP.

Calpheon Witch’s Earring x 3

Before you leave Calpheon, be sure you have completed the quest chain that will reward you with 3 Witch’s Earrings. Witch’s Earring is a nice blue grade AP earring with 5 AP and 2 Accuracy.

These quests are available for characters Lv. 51 or higher. Just enter the Hexe Sancuary node area and you will automatically recieve the quest. Hexe Sanctuary is located South of Calpheon City and East of Behr.

Cliff’s Weapons

Before leaving Calpheon territory, you will want to see if you are eligible to obtain up to three Cliff’s weapons. (Main, Sub-Weapon, and/or Awakening) The best time to complete the quests for these weapons is at level 55 and below. When you are 56+, the quests change and are much more difficult with 3 players recommended.

  • Cliff’s Weapon quests are for New or Returning players only.
    • New players are those who are 30 days (720 hours) or less from having first created their Family Name.
    • Returning players are those who have not logged in for at least 30 days (720 hours).
  • These quests are not available for accounts that have completed and earned Cliff’s weapons through previous event quests (Feb of 2019).
  • The character completing the quests must have completed either the quest “[Boss] The Witch of Horrors” or “Looking for Adventurers” from the Main Black Spirit questline in order to accept the Cliff’s weapon quests.

IMHO the best weapon available from the Cliff’s Weapon options is the Awakened Weapon, which is superior in many ways to the blue grade awakening. You may want to just get 3 of these weapons and forgo the main/subweapon, if you want the best Cliff’s weapons to use for your Alts. (Cliff’s Weapon box can be put in storage and opened on a different class character.)

The sub-weapon is the worst, but you may consider obtaining it and the main hand, if you have had trouble acquiring wealth as a new player and are using a weak main or subweapon. (You will get a +15 Liverto main hand for free soon. This weapon is better than Cliff’s, eventhough it’s blue grade.)

To learn more details about Cliff’s Weapon options and stats, please see our Cliff’s Weapon Guide.

Gear Progression (Mediah: level 51+)

If you do not quest for gear in Calpheon Territory, you will need to obtain enhanced gear for Mediah, with a minimum of 75 AP and 110 DP. The example enhanced gear below requires no questing, but will cost you silver at the Marketplace and/or luck possibly more silver to enhance it yourself. The accessories are purchased at the vendor. This gear would allow you to hunt at Abandoned Iron Mine. The image below is just one example of how to obtain 75 AP and 110 DP. View its details on Gear Calculator.

    Gear Progression (Valencia: level 55+)

Bashim Base in Valencia is a popular location to start your adventures into the desert lands. It has an AP recommendation of 160 and DP of 200. You will notice that the quested gear from Mediah is not powerful enough for this area. A TRI weapon and a DUO subweapon with DUO level armor + Asula Accessory Set meets the recommended AP/DP. See an example of this DUO Armor set in gear planner. This gear set has 175 AP and 226 DP.

    Reform Stones

Around this time you can upgrade your green grade gear into yellow grade with Reform Stones. The Ultimate versions have a 100% success rate. They can be crafted or bought at the Marketplace.

Armor Ultimate: Each Ultimate Armor Reform Stone will give 5 extra DP and 2 extra Damage Reduction.
Main Weapon Ultimate: Using Ultimate Weapon Reform Stone will give you 48 extra accuracy, 4 extra AP, +1 Attack Speed, and +1 Critical Hit on your main hand. You can also put Ultimate on your Awakening weapon, increasing its AP by 2.
Sub Weapon Ultimate: Puting the Reform Stone on your sub weapon will give you 1 extra AP and +1 Special Attack Extra Damage. Special attack increases:

    • Critical hit damage
    • Down attack damage
    • Back attack damage
    • Air attack damage

Free +15 Liverto Main Weapon from Challenge

There is a Challenge (Y) which allows you to receive the “+15 Liverto Weapon Box” as a reward when reaching Lv. 55. This is available once per Family. This is a nice blue-grade weapon that you can upgrade and will help you gear up for harder areas in Valencia. You only get one, so choose the class you open it on wisely! Use this, if you can afford to enhance it to TRI.

    Valencia Main Quest Armors

The following gear is obtained in Valencia, by completing the Main Valencia quest line. Must be level 55+. The main quest line including Calpheon/Mediah Main quest lines are all required in order to start the Valencia Main quest line.

I wouldn’t recommend this gear for hunting in Valencia zones. But I’m listing it anyway, in case you’re very new and are having trouble obtaining anything better. Perhaps you can get a friend’s help for the tougher Coop quests in this quest line.

    Awakened Weapons (Level 56+)

    Black Spirit Awakening

At level 56, you will get a quest from your Black Spirit for the Awakening quest line. After finishing, you will have the option of choosing between Succession or Awakened skills. You will get a blue grade Awakening weapon like the Azure Thunder Celestial Bo Staff (Archer is the exception, and has access to a special beginner Awakening weapon only, until they complete their Ascension.) The green grade version, (ex. Practice Celestial Bo Staff) would be much cheaper to enhance if silver is running low. You can purchase green grade Awakening weapons for 120k from Tulem, the Arms Dealer in Altinova, if you can’t find any that are already enhanced on the Marketplace. You will want at least +15. The goal is DUO or TRI.

You also have the option of enhancing the main quest Ultimate Katan awakening weapon. According to its description it has a “Higher chance to enhance than other awakening weapons. However, cannot be registered on the Central Market.”

    Freed Magical Accessories:

    • icon Forest’s Eye Earring

Boss Gear: BIS End Game Gear Set

BIS (Best in Slot) gear in BDO is boss gear. It is recommended that you be at least level 56 with 140 Awakening AP and 180 DP to take part in world boss and field boss fights. It’s probably a waste of resources to enhance above 400 gear score with normal gear.

Example 400 Gear Score BDO 400 Renown Gear Set

Start looking into obtaining boss gear ASAP. You can obtain them even before you reach a certain level, with a little luck and hopefully not too much patience!

    Boss Types:
    • World Bosses: spawn at set times (Kzarka, Karanda, Kutum, Nouver, Vell, Offin-Tett, Muraka, Quint, Garmoth)
    • Field Bosses: spawn randomly, but within a window if they are trained. (Bheg, Mudster, RedNose, Tree, Katzvariak) Respawn timers are based on when the boss was last all-cleared. Discord helps keep track of this. Post-maintenance timers are different from respawn timers.

If you want to start PVP with normal gear, you may want to at least TRI armor. TRI your helmet first as it is one piece you will own the longest, because it’s less of an upgrade than the other boss pieces. Since Kzarka will probably be your first boss gear, you might keep your mainhand at DUO to save silver.

    Boss Gear Progression

It is usually recommended to replace/upgrade Boss Gear in the order of importance as to how much it will empower your character. However, Boss gear is not easy to come by. If you do happen upon some, it’s ok to go out of order, but you might want to wait on enhancing the helmet, since it’s not that big of a difference and would be costly to upgrade. For accessories, you might consider focusing on blue grade accessories first, since upgrading 1 yellow grade accessory will cost in the billions of silver. Blue grade are much cheaper, but aren’t BIS. They make good backups though when yellow grade accessories fail enhancement.

      Here is a popular recommendation:
    1. Kzarka Mainhand Weapon (normally the easiest boss item to obtain) or Offin Tett’s (slightly more AP, but less Attack Speed and Accuracy) or Blackstar Weapon (a quested red grade weapon with massive PVE Monster AP.)
    2. Dandelion Awakened Weapon
    3. Sub-weapons: Kutum (PVE) / Nouver (PVP)
    4. Bheg’s Gloves
    5. Urugon’s Shoes or Muskan’s Shoes (Evasion)
    6. Chest: Dim Tree Spirit’s Armor
    7. Griffon’s Helmet or Giath’s Helmet
      • (Patch Notes – 16th January 2019) As Kamasylvia Griffon Hunting has been added, the new monsters for Hunting, <Wild> King Griffon have been added to areas of Kamasylvia.
      • Upon performing Butcher on the defeated <Wild> King Griffon, you have a high chance of obtaining Spirit Pouch of Ferocious Beast as loot and a low chance of obtaining Griffon Leather or Intact Griffon’s Beak.
      • You can perform Manufacture to craft ‘Griffon’s Helmet’ with the following materials: Intact Griffon’s Beak (1) + Griffon Leather (10) + Pure Zinc Crystal (100) + Supreme Hard Hide (120) + Supreme Fancy Feather (120).
    8. Yelow grade accessories

You may decide to focus on Dande before Kzarka to reach the AP brackets. For example, most softcap players will hit the 261 Awakening AP bracket if they get their Dande pen, which gives another 18 AP (non-sheet). If you are a player that focuses on Awakening combat, then Dande may also be your first choice.
