Gear Progression in BDO is very important. Black Desert Online puts a priority on AP and DP over character levels.
With the right armor, weapons, and enhancements you can decimate enemies who get in your way!
Without the right gear, you will have a difficult time progressing in the game.
Gear Enhancement Levels
Armor, weapons, and accessories can have an enhancement level that improves its stats. For example increasing Defense Points (DP), Attack Points (AP), and many other stats.
- PEN (V) +20 (best/max level)
- TET (IV) +19
- TRI (III) +18
- DUO (II) +17
- PRI (I) +16
- +15 to +1
Gear Grades
Gear in BDO is graded by rarity and is color coded. This gear grade often shows us how valuable and powerful an armor, weapon, or accessory is in comparison to similar gear.
- Red Grade – best grade
- Yellow Grade
- Blue Grade
- Green Grade
- White Grade — don’t touch! 🙂
TIP: There are no character level restrictions on enhanced armor, weapons, and accessories. Even a level 1 character can wear the best PEN (V) boss gear.
Armor Basics
The main benefit to armor is that it offers DP (Defense Points). This is a combination of Evasion and Damage Reduction.
This means you will evade monster hits more often and reduce damage they deal to you.
Armor Benefits:
- Set Bonuses – wear two or more of the same type of gear and get a buff
- Item Effects – a buff for wearing that one piece of armor. For example, Weight Limit increases, Health Points, etc.
Sharing Gear with Alts:
Most gear can be shared between all your characters by putting them into storage at the Storage Keeper located in most major cities.
You could also transfer gear to an Alt easily after completing the Magnus Questline. This allows you to access distant city storages from any Storage Keeper.
Weapon Basics
Weapons and Sub-weapons (aka Secondary Weapons) are class specific. Some weapons can be shared with more than one class. The main-hand weapon of Staff, for example, is used by Witches and Wizards. The sub-weapon Steel Dagger is shared between Witch, Wizard, and Ranger.
Awakening weapons can only be equipped by characters level 56+ who have completed their class specific Awakened quest line. (Archer is the exception to this rule and he is limited to a beginner Archer Awakening Weapon until level 56.) Awakening weapons cannot be shared with a different class.
Main | Sub | Awaken | Class | |

BDO Gear Stats: Wha?!
Feeling a bit confused by all of the data viewable in the gear item window?
We have a combat and skills guide that will help you learn more about your character and why you might want more Accuracy or Evasion, etc.
Naru Gear
Use Naru Gear and enhance it.
Naru Gear is obtained from completing the main quest line. Press O key then Main tab to view your progress and rewards.
You can obtain Naru Gear other ways, but it’s better to just do the main quest. Completing the main quest has many benefits, not just gear. (Free pets, etc)
Beginner Gear Progression (Normal Servers)
- Beginner Black Stones are used to enhance Naru Gear to PEN level.
Beginner Gear Progression (Season Servers)
PEN Naru → PRI Tuvala → PEN Tuvala → TET Boss
- PEN Naru gear is exchanged for PRI Tuvala Gear. View How-to here. (Requires Season Character)
- Enhance Tuvala to PEN level.
- Exchange PEN Tuvala gear for TET boss gear which gives Guaranteed PEN boss gear.
Gear Enhancement
Naru Gear and most gear in BDO must be enhanced in order to help you as you progress in levels and enter more dangerous territories.
Naru Gear is easier than any other gear to enhance. For more information, please visit our Naru Gear Guide.
For a guide on enhancing normal gear, please view our Enhancement Guide.
Example PRI Naru Armor with PEN Naru Weapons
This full, 12 piece, Naru Gear set should be more than enough for beginner players venturing into Mediah (Lv. 51+) for the first time. The easiest hunting zone in Mediah (Abandoned Iron Mine) has a gear recommendation of 75 AP and 110 DP.
- AP 97~103 (100)
- Accuracy 192
- DP 140
- Max HP 200
- Max Stamina 100
- Weight Limit 10LT
- Bonus AP 5
Defense
- Damage Reduction 69
- Evasion 71
- Hidden Damage Reduction 10
- Hidden Evasion 179
Effects
- Attack Speed 4
- Casting Speed 2
- Movement Speed 2
Gear Score: 240
Beginner Accessories
You have 6 accessory slots to fill with 2 rings, 2 earrings, 1 belt, and 1 necklace.
For beginner accessories, it is recommended that you prioritize AP or Accuracy over everything else.
TIP:
Be careful with enhancement of accessories. Accessories have more difficult enhancement rules and it can get very expensive. Even Naru Accessories, which are easy to enhance, can start adding up in Beginner Blackstone cost. Always compare the cost/benefit of enhancement of accessories. Usually, upgrading your weapons and armor first is the best option, then look into accessory enhancement.
Beginner Accessories: Naru Accessories
Naru Accessories and Beginner Black Stones are given during the main quest line. Use those, if you can.
For other people that have a difficult time obtaining accessories, just buy some cheap ones off the Marketplace. Bares is a good beginner AP focused accessory.
TIP:
Don’t get too hung up on accessories as a beginner. They don’t have much bang for their buck, when compared to weapons.
TRI Naru Accessory Set
The Naru Accessory Set is very nice, even at base stats.
Lets upgrade it to TRI and see what happens!
Notice the nice boost to both AP and Accuracy. But watch the cost of enhancement vs black stone cost!
TRI Naru Accessory Set Stats
- AP: 41
- Accuracy: 27
- Weight Limit: +40 LT
Naru Accessory Enhancement Chances
- PRI Enhancement chance: 70%
- DUO Enhancement chance: 50%
- TRI Enhancement chance: 40%
Accessory Progression Beyond Naru Accessories
When you are ready to head into Mediah, at around level 51, your accessory set will soon be replaced by the Asula Accessory Set. This is the best unenhanced accessory set in the game and will last a long time. You can obtain them via questing in Calpheon, but it’s more work to do it that way.
View Asula Set drop location maps and quest details in our Asula Guide.
Alternatives to Quested Gear (Drops, Bought From MP & Shops)
Hate Questing Much?!
I HIGHLY recommend you do the main quest line, even if you hate questing. There are many, many, many benefits to it. (Inventory slots, free pets, and other goodies. It also opens up other things. For example, new content and events often require main quest line completion to begin.)
If you just want to hunt and not quest for a while, you can also obtain some good armor via the Marketplace. Naru gear and other gear can drop from monsters, but that relies on luck.
Best Beginner Weapons Sold on the Marketplace
The main and sub-weapons you get from the main story line are sufficient to get you through the beginner zones and even well into Mediah. However, the quest chains can be quite lengthy and you may hate questing.
For players that don’t want to depend on quested gear, or can afford more, there are many options available on the Marketplace. But, we repeatedly see the same 4 weapons in player recommendations.
Top 4 Recommended Main Hand Weapons:
Table updated from: BDO Best Weapons for Leveling Up and Starters (2018)
Duo Ultimate | Min AP | Max AP | Avg AP | Ex AP | Eff AP | Slot | Impt Note |
Bares | 79 | 83 | 81 | 22 | 99.7 | 1 | All Species |
Yuria | 84 | 89 | 86.5 | 22 | 105.2 | 1 | Human Only. 86.5 All else |
Rosar | 85 | 90 | 87.5 | 0 | 87.5 | 2 | 2 Slots |
Kalis | 81 | 95 | 88 | 0 | 88 | 1 | High RS |
Which one is best? I’m going to leave that up to you. Green grade weapons just help you get to better weapons. Don’t get too heavily invested in them, as you will want to focus on obtaining a boss main hand ASAP. Don’t enhance green grade past TRI.
Traditionally, players opt for the highest AP, but there are those who swear by Bares “effective AP”, etc. For more info from the pro-Bares camp, visit the guide linked above. They also recommend max Accuracy for a sub-weapon.
Highest AP Sub Weapons (Green Grade for Beginners):
- Axion Shield: Warrior/Valkyrie/Guardian
- Steel Dagger: Witch/Wizard/Ranger
- Jubre Talisman: Sorceress
- Oros Ornamental Knot: Berserker/Dark Knight
- Needle Trinket: Tamer
- White Horn Bow: Musa/Maehwa
- Estique Kunai/Shuriken: Kunoichi/Ninja
- Scale Vambrace: Striker/Mystic
- Ganatte Ra’ghon: Archer
- Oros Vitclari: Shai
Mainhand – Elsh
Elsh often recommended, but it is a sort of pipe dream because it’s difficult to get. The accuracy and damage to all species buff is the same as the Kzarka boss mainhand. The AP is low, but in later levels you may use your Awakening weapon more, depending on your class, play style, and level. The Elsh accuracy and damage buff will make you do more damage with your Awakened skills. It also has a 5% chance to heal HP on hit. But Elsh weapons are only obtained via one quest ([Boss] Black Spirit and the Giant Imp) and could be challenging to obtain via the Marketplace. Enhancement could be tricky and expensive. Also, Kzarka boss weapons are the easiest boss gear to obtain. So whichever green grade weapon you pick, it probably wont last for long.
Rosar
Rosar provides 2 crystal slots and has the highest AP of all the green grade weapons. (unless “effective AP” is calculated.)
In my humble opinion, if you aren’t satisfied with the main quest line gear, just buy an enhanced weapon that’s cheap off of the Marketplace.
All Mainhand Recommendations:
- Elsh: Extra Damage to All, High Accuracy, 1 Crystal slot
- Rosar: High AP, 2 Crystal slots
- Kalis: High AP, 1 Crystal slot
- Azwell: Medium AP, 1 Crystal slot, Good Accuracy
- Krea: Medium AP, 2 Crystal slots
- Yuria: 1 Crystal Slot, Increased Damage to Humans (Good for PVP)
- Bares: high “effective AP” (Extra Damage to All Species), 1 Crystal slot
Best Beginner Armor Sold on the Marketplace
Armor pieces can be upgraded to +5 without chance of failure.
Grunil and Heve are the most recommended armor sets.
Grunil Armor Set:
- 2 Crystal Sockets:
Allows you to socket higher attack speed, movement speed, and evasion. - Powerful Set Effects:
2 piece set effect: +5 AP
3 piece set effect: +150 HP
4 piece set effect: +2 AP
Heve Armor Set:

3 piece set effect: +50HP
Beginner Gear Sold by NPC Shops
Weapon and armor NPC shops in regions of Calpheon and Serendia sell already enhanced gear. This list is a sort of last resort list, if you can’t find anything on the Marketplace. I don’t see this as happening, but you never know!
NOTE: the Silver cost for this NPC sold gear may be more expensive than the Central Market at the moment! Check there first.

Beginner Accessories Sold in an NPC Shop
The Root Treant Accessory set is easily purchased from Grandus in Calpheon City.
He is the <Armor Vendor> located near the Northern <Storage Keeper>.
The set gives a nice bonus to Weight Limit: +150 LT and has a ton of Accuracy. This set has higher AP than unenhanced Bares, but is lower AP than most other beginner sets, like Jarrett’s. But it’s good enough to move from Calpheon into Mediah, if you enjoy a challenge.

Gear Progression in Calpheon: Level 30+
Calpheon offers many gear options, which I’ll list below. However, I recommend skipping them and sticking with the Naru gear from the main quest line. Keep up on enhancement of the Naru armor and weapons. Get them to PEN asap. Wait to enhance accessories until later, because it’s costly in Beginner Black Stones.
Root Treant Accessory Set: Calpheon Monster Drop
Here is another accessory option that’s not neccessary, but you may have fun obtaining them anyway. The Treant Spirit’s Accessory set is obtained by hunting in SW Calpheon.
The set gives a nice bonus to Weight Limit: +130 LT.
This set trades Accuracy for AP compared to the Root Treant set.

Loure's Lost Armor Set: Calpheon Mob Drops
This is a nice armor set, but it’s not neccessary. It’s optional for those who don’t have enhanced Naru Gear and need more AP/DP before venturing into Mediah.

View gear set on bdocodex.com Gear Planner
This gear set has 97 AP and 132 DP. This gear set provides a gear score that would allow you to venture into Mediah. The easiest hunting zone in Mediah (Abandoned Iron Mine) has a gear recommendation of 75 AP and 110 DP.
3x Witch's Earring: Calpheon Kill Quests
I’m including these, just for that completionist’s sake. At the very least, you can sell these at the Marketplace for extra silver.
Calpheon has a kill quest chain that will reward you with 3 Witch’s Earrings. Witch’s Earring is a nice blue grade AP earring with 5 AP and 2 Accuracy.
These quests are available for characters Lv. 51 or higher. Just enter the Hexe Sancuary node area and you will automatically recieve the quest. Hexe Sanctuary is located South of Calpheon City and East of Behr.
– Accessory Filled with the Witch’s Power II (Kill 700 Hexe Sanctuary mobs.)
– Accessory Filled with the Witch’s Power III (Kill 1500 Hexe Sanctuary mobs.)
Cliff's Weapons: New or Returning Players Only
Before leaving Calpheon territory, you will want to see if you are eligible to obtain up to three Cliff’s weapons. (Main, Sub-Weapon, and/or Awakening) The best time to complete the quests for these weapons is at level 55 and below. When you are 56+, the quests change and are much more difficult with 3 players recommended.
- Cliff’s Weapon quests are for New or Returning players only.
- New players are those who are 30 days (720 hours) or less from having first created their Family Name.
- Returning players are those who have not logged in for at least 30 days (720 hours).
- These quests are not available for accounts that have completed and earned Cliff’s weapons through previous event quests (Feb of 2019).
- The character completing the quests must have completed either the quest “[Boss] The Witch of Horrors” or “Looking for Adventurers” from the Main Black Spirit questline in order to accept the Cliff’s weapon quests.

TRI Cliff’s Staff

IMHO the best weapon available from the Cliff’s Weapon options is the Awakened Weapon, which is superior in many ways to the blue grade awakening. You may want to just get 3 of these weapons and forgo the main/subweapon, if you want the best Cliff’s weapons to use for your Alts. (Cliff’s Weapon box can be put in storage and opened on a different class character.)
The sub-weapon is the worst, but you may consider obtaining it and the main hand, if you have had trouble acquiring wealth as a new player and are using a weak main or subweapon. (You will get a +15 Liverto main hand for free soon. This weapon is better than Cliff’s, eventhough it’s blue grade.)
To learn more details about Cliff’s Weapon options and stats, please see our Cliff’s Weapon Guide.

Black Abyssal Weapon Exchange:
Accept the quest “Black Abyssal Weapon Exchange,” to exchange your Black Abyssal Weapon for a Black Abyssal Weapon Box for another class with NPC Abdul Jaum, the Skill Instructor of Altinova.
Requirements:
- Lv. 55 or higher, accept and complete the “Past Glory” questline from NPC Konah of Altinova Arena
- OR complete the questline “Past Glory” after accepting the Mediah Main Quest “[Crossroad] Until We Meet Again” OR complete the quest “The Way Back” after accepting the Mediah Main Quest “[Crossroad] For Altinova”
Roaring Magical Armor
The main Mediah quest line will eventually give you a piece of armor that is about the same as a PEN Naru armor piece.
And you DON’T have to enhance it! Woot!
For this reason, you can hold off a bit on that PEN Naru armor piece and focus on other gear pieces, first.

Other Gear Options for Hunting in Mediah
If you are a completionist or want to know other options, I’ve added another option below.
78 AP & 110 DP Gear Set from NPC Shops & Marketplace
If you do not quest for gear in Calpheon Territory, you will need to obtain enhanced gear for Mediah, with a minimum of 75 AP and 110 DP. The example enhanced gear below requires no questing, but will cost you silver at the Marketplace and/or luck and possibly more silver to enhance yourself. The accessories are purchased at the vendor. This gear would allow you to hunt at Abandoned Iron Mine in Mediah. The image below is just one example of how to obtain 75 AP and 110 DP.
View the build below in bdocodex.com Gear Calculator.
Grind in Mediah until you have upgraded and replaced all your accessories with the Asula Accessory Set. At level 53, you will get a quest from Black Spirit, which will reward you with one of the General Accessories, which is enhancable to PEN after you level and complete quest lines.
Gearing Up for Valencia While in Mediah
Bashim Base in Valencia is a popular location to start your adventures into the desert lands. It has the easiest AP/DP requirements.
As stated previously, the main quest line is your friend in this game! This will give you Naru Gear and all you need to enhance it.
But, you will need more than just Naru gear for Valencia.
As a new player, you can save some silver by obtaining the gear set below. There are other more pricey options further down.
- All Naru accessories have been replaced by DUO Asula Accessories.
- Awakening quest line weapon is used
- Roaring Magical Armor
- Obsidian Abyssal Weapon
- PEN Naru of everything else
Asula Accessory Set
If you are a Season character, stick with Tuvala Accessories.
I only recommend Asula for characters that are NOT Season Characters, or if for some reason, you’re having trouble obtaining Tuvala Accessories.
The Asula Set of 6 accessory pieces gives a total of +45 AP and +7 DP. It also adds 20 Accuracy, 7 Damage Reduction, and 350 Max HP, with 100LT to Weight. (All stats unenhanced. For Asula Enhancement, see our guide link below.)
Awakening Weapons (Level 56+)
At level 56, you will get a quest from your Black Spirit for the Awakening quest line and then a Succession quest line will open up.
Here, you will probably get your first Awakening Weapons. (A Canon Awakening Weapon for normal characters and TRI Tuvala Awakening for season characters.)
Damage for Awakening skills is partly determined by the main hand weaon and vice versa. So both awakening and main hand weapons are important, no matter if you are primarily Succession or Awakening.
- Succession & Awakening AP
Awakened Skills: adds 30% of main hand weapon AP for damage calculations
Succession Skills: adds 30% of Awakening weapon AP

Narchillan Gear:
If you are a Season character, exchange your PEN Naru for Tuvala.
I only recommend Narchillan for characters that are NOT Season Characters. This gear is comparable to DUO-TRI Blackstar gear and provides the same set bonuses that Blackstar and boss gear provides. Mix and match Narchillan, Blackstar, and boss gear for the same set bonuses.
Speak to the Black Spirit and accept quest “[Special Aid] Fughar’s Letter”.
Complete this quest and the rest of the series by speaking to Fughar in any major city. He will offer 7 different quests to exchange PEN Naru gear for Narchillan gear.
Each quest can only be completed once per family.

Valencia Main Quest Armors
The following gear is obtained in Valencia, by completing the Main Valencia quest line. Must be level 56+. The main quest line including Calpheon/Mediah Main quest lines are all required in order to start the Valencia Main quest line.
You may need help for this quest line from a friend. There is a Coop quest, in which you have to run inside a dangerous area and run back out. If you are quick and have good enough gear + HP pots, you might make it.
The gear really isn’t that good, but maybe you are having trouble obtaining anything better. Perhaps you can get a friend’s help for the tougher Coop quest in this quest line.
